English is a strange language. It's got words with silent letters that throw non-native speakers completely off. What is up with that? Regardless, it is still one of the most widely spoken languages around the world. That doesn't mean that some of the words don't have a ridiculous meaning in a different country, though. Hint: calling someone a "brat" in Russia isn't an insult.
1、Smoking
In French, smoking means "tuxedo." Nice smoking!
2、Air
In Indonesian, this means “water.” Close enough!
3、Gift
Possibly one of the most ironic words on this list. In German, gift means “poison.”
4、Brat
In Russian, it means "brother." (брат) 'Sup brat!
5、Vader
No, not Darth Vader. In Dutch, vader means “father.”
6、Trombone
In French, this is a paperclip. "Anyone need a trombone?"
7、Dump
Are you ready for a mind-trip? In Swedish, dump means "bump."
8、Pepperoni
In Italian, this is a chilli pepper. Tasty!
9、Handy
This means “cellphone” in German. Makes sense.
10、Hammer
In German, this means “awesome” i.e., Das ist so hammer! (That is so awesome!)
11、Mist
In German, this means “manure.” Does the word misty refers to the smell of manure?
12、Ohio
If you say this to a Japanese person they will understand “good morning.”
13、Pet
In French this means “fart.” So when you go to Paris, be careful when talking about your pets.
14、Barf
In Hindi, Urdu, and Farsi, this means “snow.” "The barf is beautiful in winter."
15、Eagle
If you say “eagle” in German, it sounds like the word for “hedgehog.” Why you gotta be so confusing, language?
16、No
In Polish, Czech and some other Slavic languages this can actually mean “yes.” Talk about mixed signals!
17、lol
In Dutch, lol means "fun". So “we hebben lol” translates to “we are having fun.”
18、Gary
If your name is Gary, then I've got bad news for you. In Japanese, Gary means “diarrhea.”
19、Fart
In Norwegian, fart means “speed.” "We're going to be late, pick up fart!"
20、Kiss
Awkwardly, in Swedish, kiss means “pee.”
