Famous for his paintings Mona Lisa and The Last Supper, Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) is probably the best-known artist from the European Renaissance period.

To commemorate the 500th anniversary of his death, Paris’ Louvre Museum opened its largest ever Leonardo da Vinci exhibition on Oct 24.

On display were nearly 120 of da Vinci’s works, including his paintings, drawings and writings. “At the heart of the Louvre’s exhibition are the lessons ... about Leonardo’s personality,” noted CNN.

As a man of many talents, da Vinci was good at painting, science, engineering and invention.

During his life, da Vinci painted relatively little. There are only about 15 remaining paintings, of which nine were in this show. He worked slowly, often spending more than 10 years on one painting. Many said that his wide range of interests distracted his attention, but experts at the museum disagreed. His interest in science – particularly astronomy, botany and mathematical problems – was part of his desire for perfect paintings, they say.

“His life was spent striving for the most perfect form of painting,” said Vincent Delieuvin in The New York Times.
