Beijing Daxing International Airport officially opens on September 25. XINHUA
On the southern border of Beijing is a gigantic field occupied by a massive “starfish”, a structure with six arms. It’s the Beijing Daxing International Airport (BDIA).
一座“六指廊”建筑在北京南部边界处拔地而起，犹如一个巨大的“海星”。这正是北京大兴国际机场。
On Sept 25, President Xi Jinping announced the official opening of the BDIA. The new airport complex, consisting of a main terminal, a supporting service building and a parking lot, covers an area of about 1.4 million square meters. That’s equivalent to 63 Tian’anmen Squares, according to Beijing Review.
9月25日，国家主席习近平郑重宣布，北京大兴国际机场正式投运。这座新机场由一座主航站楼、一座综合服务楼以及一个停车场组成，占地面积约140万平方米。据《北京周报》报道，这相当于63个天安门广场的面积。
The new airport is expected to ease pressure on the Beijing Capital International Airport (BCIA). “BCIA handled more than 100 million passengers in 2018, which is close to its capacity,” said Cui Xiaohao, an official with the Beijing Municipal Development and Reform Commission, at a press conference in January.
这座新机场将缓解北京首都国际机场的运行压力。“首都机场2018年旅客吞吐量已突破1亿人次，处于超饱和的运行状态，”北京市发展和改革委员会崔小浩在今年1月的一场新闻发布会上如此表示。
By 2021, the new airport is expected to handle 45 million passengers a year. By 2025, that number is expected to grow to 72 million.
到2021年，这座新机场将实现吞吐量4500万人次，到2025年将实现机场吞吐量7200万人次。
Designed by legendary Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid, BDIA was listed as the first of the “seven wonders of the modern world near completion” by the Guardian in 2015.
2015年，由伊拉克裔英国籍传奇建筑师扎哈·哈迪德所设计的大兴国际机场被《卫报》列为即将竣工的“新世界七大奇迹”榜首。
The airport is the world’s first to be designed with double-deck departure and arrival platforms. “It’s more efficient for the passengers than any other large airport terminal of the same size in the world,” Guo Yanchi, the chief engineer in charge of construction, told China Daily.
这座机场是全球首座采用“双进双出”设计的航站楼。“对于乘客而言，这比全球其他相同大小的大型机场航站楼更高效，”大兴机场建设指挥部总工程师郭雁池在接受《中国日报》采访时如此表示。
The terminal was designed to shorten the walking distance for passengers, Guo said, adding that it is only 600 meters, or less than an eight-minute walk, from the center of the terminal to the furthest boarding gate in each wing.
航站楼的设计也缩短了旅客们的步行距离，郭雁池表示，他补充道，从航站楼中心到每个指廊最远端登机口只有600米，步行时间不超过8分钟。
BDIA has also adopted various new technologies to make it smarter and more efficient.
大兴国际机场还采用了多种新科技，打造更智慧、更高效的机场。
According to the Civil Aviation Administration of China, 86 percent of check-ins can be done through self-check-in kiosks, and 76 percent of luggage can be checked automatically with the help of self-service bag-drop machines.
据中国民用航空局介绍，大兴机场的自助值机设备覆盖率预计将达到86%，自助行李托运设备覆盖率将达到76%。
Cui said the airport has become an important economic pillar in the development of southern Beijing.
崔小浩表示，这座机场已经成为北京南部发展的重要经济支柱。
“Daxing airport is opening the south gate of the capital and will help gradually shift Beijing’s non-capital functions to neighboring locations and upgrade the region’s transport, especially in the south. It’s also a good way to boost co-ordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area,” Cui told China Daily.
“大兴机场将打开北京南大门，有序疏解北京非首都功能，加快带动该区域，尤其是南部地区交通的转型升级。这也是进一步推动京津冀协同发展的重要举措，”崔小浩在接受《中国日报》采访时如此表示。
