When The Fast and the Furious debuted in 2001, it seemed unlikely that the movie would be the opening chapter of one of the greatest successful stories of contemporary movies.

The series’ first spin-off, The Fast and Furious: Hobbs and Shaw (2019), hit Chinese mainland cinemas on Aug 23. It topped the box office on its first day and reached 700 million yuan in three days.

“The franchise seems to keep its charm as time flows,” says one review at Yahoo News.

What makes the franchise so popular?

According to UK film critic Rhianna Dhillon, the success of the series is down to its universal appeal.

“They’re films people of all ages can enjoy... children and adults alike are quite happy to watch things get blown up and smashed up,” she told BBC.

Unlike other film franchises, The Fast and Furious series isn’t trying to compete with heavy and complex storylines. Instead, it’s a visual feast.
